Bulletin Board February 24, 2011 Mike Whitehouse Laurier Athletics "We are pleased that the CCES has confirmed that our student-athletes are making good decisions and playing drug-free," said Peter Baxter, Laurier's director of Athletics and Recreation. "Laurier will continue to participate fully in educating our student-athletes and partnering with the CCES testing process to ensure that our athletes continue to play drug-free, in the spirit of fair play and ethical sport." Wilfrid Laurier University and its football players co-operated fully with the CCES throughout the testing process. One sample returned a positive finding for a prohibited substance but, upon medical review, the CCES concluded that the positive finding related to an acceptable medical prescription, which the student-athlete had disclosed to the CCES at the time of testing. "The testing results of our football athletes is a testament to the character of the young men in our program," said Gary Jeffries, Laurier's manager of football operations and head coach. "I am extremely proud of them and, at the same time, not surprised by the results." The unannounced CCES testing took place Jan. 12 and was conducted as part of the Canadian Anti-Doping Program in partnership with Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). Laurier takes a firm stance against the use of performance-enhancing drugs in university sports and regularly provides education programs to all its student-athletes to reinforce its anti-drug message.
